  • Florida Chamber of Commerce More Than Doubles its Membership in Two Days – in the “new economy”

Kate and I are almost settled in from our move to Punta Gorda, Florida from Washington State. Look for new tips and ideas on increasing membership, retention and non-dues revenue at your Chamber in the next week or so.
In the meantime I want to share a quick example of how you really can increase membership in the “new economy”.
Normally, I wouldn’t just send out an email touting the results of one of our DIRECTDrive membership campaigns. Typically, we try to be pretty humble around here and let “word of mouth” take care of spreading the news about the DIRECTDrive process and results.
But, not this time – this DIRECTDrive may inspire you to take a look at your goals for membership and reconsider what might be possible at your Chamber.
Here’s the “back story” of what happened in Wauchula, Florida and seven “secrets” to their success:
A relatively small (170 members) Florida Chamber of Commerce added 193 new members in about 48 hours just last month.
That’s a 113% increase in paid membership in just two days – despite the current “new economy” that seems to lay down new challenges for all of us every day.
    Why is this important?
This relatively small (not anymore) Florida Chamber of Commerce didn’t stop doing all of the other activities that they would normally do to increase membership – they simply added one more tool to their recruiting process and the results were amazing.
There are 300 (give or take) Chambers of Commerce in the “Sunshine State” that could all use a boost in membership from time to time. Most of these Chambers are pretty darn successful with the new member recruiting processes and systems that they are using now.
My guess is that you probably fall into that category too or you wouldn’t have even read this far – busy people find time for important things.
Here’s a quick overview of the “how and why” the Hardee County Chamber of Commerce in Wauchula, Florida literally more than doubled in size in a really short time (two days).
    1. They recognized that if they had a significant burst in membership in a short time it would energize the existing membership.
    2. They knew that there were hundreds of potential members that had not joined the Chamber of Commerce yet.
    3. Instead of relying on just one person or a couple of sales people they realized that they needed to get regular “everyday” members to help with the “heavy lifting” when it comes to getting the word out about the Chamber.
    4. Although new member recruiting is an ongoing, never ending process they decided to have a fixed term for this campaign and actually put a deadline of just two days to get the work done and invite as many businesses and organizations as possible to join the Chamber.
    5. They understood that their members “sphere of influence” and credibility in the business community was huge and leveraged it perfectly for their campaign.
    6. Understanding that most people see “membership recruitment” as work and sometimes even uncomfortable, they made sure the entire process was exciting and fun from start to finish. They even had a couple parties to get and keep people in the right “mindset” during the process.
    7. Recognition, awards and small prizes were handed out liberally throughout the effort (and beyond) to make sure the participating members knew just how much they were appreciated.
That was a really brief overview but the system and process they used just were not that complicated or difficult.
Sure, there are several steps to getting started, putting everything into place and implementing the plan. But, they really are just that – steps. By taking one step at a time and keeping things as easy, simple and fun as possible a small Florida Chamber of Commerce had a huge success.
I hope at least one of the seven steps above helps you in your new member recruiting. If you want more ideas or tools for increasing membership, retention and non-dues revenue check out www.chamberdirectdrive.com when you get a chance – you’ll see results from Chambers and other member-driven organizations as well.
Dedicated to helping you increase membership, retention and non-dues revenue,
    Rob Oliver
P.S. Chambers across Florida have seen huge increases in membership (fast) using this program. Four more Florida Chambers are onboard for this fall.
We have three (maybe four) openings left for this fall. If closing out 2011 with a surge in membership sounds interesting to you send me an email – rob@theolivergroupllc.com and we can talk about the possibilities. As a bonus for taking fast action we will even “throw in” a 32 inch flat screen TV to use as an award during your DIRECTDrive – you just need to let us know fast before the last dates are taken.
